El historiador chileno Vicuña Mackenna (1831-1886) vivió la América posterior a la empresa independentista y estudió apasionadamente el pasado para iluminar y discutir su presente. Parlamentario, conoció el exilio por razones políticas y fue candidato presidencial. Lógicamente se interesó mucho por la época de la emancipación y entre los muchos trabajos que dedicó al tema, el presente, que no pudo concluir, indaga la personalidad y dimensiones de uno de los mayores genios militares hispanoamericanos, así como, sin contradicciones, acaso el mayor abanderado de la paz entre pueblos enemigos redactó las capitulaciones que respetaban los derechos humanos de los vencidos , fue un disciplinado organizador y quiso siempre alejarse del poder. Mediante "cuadros" y numerosos documentos, este trabajo, peculiar texto de una época, amable relación histórica, recorre algunos momentos del Mariscal de Ayacucho hasta 1828.
