Includes "The Betrothed", " Chronicles of the Canongate", and "The Highland Widow". Illustrated--Frontispiece and three monotone plates. Olive-green buckram binding is rubbed on edges, light scuffing to corner and spine head and heel, a short black line and two scuff marks to front. Binding partially loose from crash at spine heel end, tight at the spine head, with endband. Sewn binding tight and solid. Inner hinge cracked between two blank front endpapers. Top edge gilt. Fore edge and lower edge very rough cut; may be some unopened pages. Pages very clean, no marks of any kind, no foxing, lightly toned. The Waverly Novels are a long series of novels by Sir Walter Scott, the Magnum Opus 48 volume set being published between 1829-1833, with all subsequent sets based on that set until the standard modern edition, a thirty-volume set, was published. The early novels dealt with phases of Scottish history characterizing ordinary people, often using regional dialect; later novels were historical novels, published between 1814-1832. The main novel in this volume, "The Betrothed", was first published in1825, set during the time period 1187-1192, in Wales and Gloucester, England.
