Normal toning in margins. Binding intact. Please see photos. Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. His economical and understate style - which included his iceberg theory - had a strong influence on 20th century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and public image brought him admiration from later generations. Traveling in Paris, Hemingway befriend Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and others. A regular at Stein's salon, Hemingway met his share of influential artists like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Juan Gris. At the bottom of the front cover of the jacket, there is a 3" by 1" section in the first part of Hemingway's last name that has been torn loose and that rests somewhat awkwardly within the protective cover in which we've housed the jacket.

Robert Jordan is an American who travels to Spain to oppose the fascist forces of Generalísimo Francisco Franco. A superior has ordered him to travel behind enemy lines and destroy a bridge, using the aid of a group of guerrillas who have been living in the mountains nearby. Robert Jordan encounters one of those in their camp, María, a young Spanish native whose life has been shattered by the outbreak of the war. His strong sense of duty clashes with both Republican leader Pablo's unwillingness to commit to a covert operation and his own joie de vivre that is kindled by his newfound love for María.
