This brilliant and impassioned study provides a welcome exception to the rule. During the bloody days of the Commune in the spring of 1871, after the Prussians had lifted their siege of Paris, women of the laboring class, and even of the lower middle class, began to demand the rights of their male counterparts, make common cause with the proletariat in general, join political committees, and fight behind the barricades in a desperate attempt to throw off the yoke of economic exploitation, domestic servitude, and the resultant squalid misery that had been their lot since before the Industrial Revolution. As often as the most hardened reader of history encounters descriptions of the life of the poor in the great cities of the nineteenth century, it must always be with a new sense of shock and horror. Twenty~five cents was the average daily pay of the seamstresses, laundresses, and domestic servants who worked twelve to fourteen hours a day, and usually this sum was presumed to include the support of children. The far~below subsistence wage was normally augmented by prostitution, and even that did not prevent whole families from being decimated by slow starvation. Such were the deplorable conditions which inspired the violent involvement in the Commune of women who had nothing to lose from defeat and everything to gain from victory. Their excesses were grossly exaggerated by their many enemies, and historians of both the Right and Left have made light of their motivation and sacrifice. A grim fate awaited many of them at the hands of the judges of the Third Republic, and before that, when, at the end of May, 1871, the troops of the Thiers government attacked Paris, hundreds were raped and bayonetted to death in the streets in a few days of orgiastic bloodletting. Mlle. Thomas, with great knowledge and sympathy, and inspired by the somber and almost majestic urgency of her subject, has set the record straight. The book will surely be recognized as a major contribution, and the kind on which our understanding of history depends.
