Losses to spine-ends, heavy wear to rounded corners, bookplate to inner front board, ink WRITING to flyleaf rear. 4 b/w plates, pages opposite are discoloured due to ink reaction. Text is otherwise clean & in nice condition.

Condition of the books is Good; leather at exterior joints is cracked, hinges are a little loose, but holding, leather is scuffed, and missing a few small pieces on volume 1, text and illustrations are very clean, with no foxing, toning or staining. Leather. Etat : Poor. illustrated by Paul Fourdinier (known as Pierre or Peter.) (illustrateur). Fifth Edition. pages 711 to 1043 + 31 plates. Missing any preliminaries so edition and date not stated but page numbering etc tie in with the 1721 Fifth edition, The content is still well bound together and apart from expected ageing and a very light moisture stain to a few pages of the postscript the interior is in nice clean condition. Owner's name dated 1805 inside cover. Please see pics for better idea of condition.

The leather looks to have been professionally and very well repaired at some point. The gutters all have very well done cloth reinforcements that don't seem original. Marbled end papers. Vintage Bookplates in each volume. Some modest loss of spine leather at the head of each volume. Overall, a very solid set in period leather bindings. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Rubbing and loss to spines and edges, boards well rubbed as well. Most hinges cracked but still intact, with vols 2 and 3 being fairly strong still. Bumped corners showing some exposed board. Beautifully illustrated with steel-engraved plates throughout. Interiors bright and clean, not foxed. Some glue-staining around turnovers visible on endsheets. Bookplate of Hyman R. Ressler. Tonson published the first edition of Dryden's translation in 1697; this is a Very Good (minus) copy of a Later Printing - the Second Volume, containing the "Aeneid." Full leather binding with five raised bands, gilt decorations and titling on the spine. Clean text; marbled endpapers, 370 pages (with a Dedication using 105 of those). Distinguished by 42 spectacular illustrations. Rubbed at the margins, covers cracked at the spine; the spine rubbing rather extensive. Pages 171-190 are present but have come loose. Please note the condition issues; Quercus must offer this as aBinding Copy, in need of repairs or restoration. A nice rebind would make this a spectacular addition. Later Printing. Full-Leather. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Full-Leather. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. Later edition from 1721. Volumes I and II only of a three volume set. These do contain the full text of the ÆNEIS however along with a 102 page dedication by Dryden at the beginning of the first volume and also a 42 page postscript at the end of the second volume. Contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine. The title panels and the panels with the volume numbers are all lost. Volume numbers blind stamped on the spines. There is some cracking along the edges of the spines but the binding seems secure. There is some chipping to the spines at the bottom. The corners are bumped with some rubbing. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown - Margaretta Phillipina Wale of Shelford near Cambridge with the name of another family member, Lady Wale, on the front free endpaper. There is some browning around the edges of the endpapers with the rear free endpaper loose in Volume II. There is browning and spotting to the pages in places and a little insect damage to the bottoms of the pages at the front of Volume II but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked.
