Vendeur : Raptis Rare Books, ABAA/ ILAB (Palm Beach, FL, Etats-Unis)
Description de l'article : Chatto & Windus, Alfred A. Knopf, London, 1922. First edition of Proust's most well-known work. Octavo, 11 volumes, original blue cloth with titles to the spine in in gilt. In near fine condition. Translated by C.K. Scott Moncrieff. An excellent set, rare in this condition. Marcel Proust was best known for his 3200 page masterpiece, A La Recherche du Temps Perdu. First translated into English by C.K. Scott Moncrieff as 'Remembrance of Things Past', it was later revised in translation to 'In Search of Lost Time'. Semi-autobiographical, and written in a stream-of-consciousness style, W. Somerset Maugham called it 'the greatest fiction to date'. The first volume was published in 1913. Gradually withdrawing from society, Proust worked during the nights and slept during the day until his death in 1922 at the age of 51. Graham Greene named Proust, "the greatest novelist of the 20th century.". N° de réf. du vendeur 16050

Vendeur : The Petersfield Bookshop, ABA, ILAB (Petersfield, Hampshire, Royaume-Uni)
Description de l'article : Chatto & Windus, London, 1925. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. This is one of a collection of books from the shelves of Vera L. Holmes (1881-1969) that we are currently selling. Vera was a cross-dressing lesbian actress and activist who preferred to be called Jack. She was close to the centre of the WSPU and was arrested for her protests with the suffrage movement. She was best known at that period for being the chauffeur for the Pankhursts, in full male uniform in a livery that reflected the suffragette colours. During the First World War and afterwards, she was heavily involved in aid work in Serbia with Evelina Haverfield s Serbian Mission . Haverfield was Vera s long term partner. Vera was heavily involved socially and politically with the lesbian subculture of the 1920s and 30s including a strong friendship with Ellen Terry s daughter Edith Craig. Just before and for a while after Eveline s death in 1920, Vera was living in Kirkcudbright in Scotland and was having an affair with the painter Dorothy Johnstone. Vera set up a lesbian household with former colleagues from Serbia, Margaret Campbell Greenlees and Margaret Ker.Both volumes have Vera s exlibris bookplate designed by Jessie Marion King, another member of the group of women Scottish artists that Vera was friendly with. The bookplate shows St Joan of Arc, another cross-dressing woman, in full armour and has a quote from Edward Carpenter along the bottom edge Size: Octavo (standard book size). 2-volume set (complete).
