First Garnett edition, being the fifth volume of her comprehensive twelve-volume series of Dostoevsky's novels. Constance Garnett's translations of Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Turgenev introduced and popularized Russian literature among the English public. The translations, though they have been the subject of some criticism, remain in print today. The House of the Dead was originally published in Russian in 1860-2; it was first published in English under the title Buried Alive in 1881, translated by Marie von Thilo, and under this title in 1911 in the Everyman's Library. On the limitation page there is another engraving, signed by Eichenberg and also by the typesetter Michael Bixler. The typesetter used Rudolph Koch's classic blackface design for the headings throughout. This is copy number 1730 out of only 2000. Elegant stamp by former owner on the front blank sheet. Constance Garnett did the translation from the Russian. The foreword is by Boris Shragin. Tight binding suggests this has never been read.
