Description de l'article : William Heinemann, 1912. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, pp. xii, 838, crown 8vo, original red cloth, blind-stamped roundel design to upper board with publisher device in same to lower, the backstrip with lettering and ornate border design in gilt, top edge a trifle dusty and a hint of a knock to the bottom corner of upper board, tail edges roughtrimmed, very faint browning to free endpapers, near fine. An important publication: the first English translation of one of the author's major novels, and the first in a series of translations of his work by Constance Garnett - the beginning of 'a literary craze' (ODNB). An unusually good copy of a scarce book that normally gives signs of having been read. Though without mark of ownership, this copy originally belonged to Edmund C. Yates - the son of Edmund H. Yates, editor of World magazine and a close friend of Dickens; a contemporary review of the book from The Spectator (September 28, 1912) has been preserved by him, though apparently never stored with the book (no offsetting) and still thus. The lettering to the spine reads 'Novels of Dostoevsky' - other copies seen (but not all) carry the author's full name, the latter being presumably the earlier issue though blibliographic resources for Garnett's work are scant, the laid in material might lead us to suppose that the change in binding had been effected before or around September in the year of publication. Description de l'article : London: William Heinemann in association with Henry Frowde., 1912. First edition in English. Colonial issue. Publisher's original red cloth with titles and decoration in gilt to the spine, blind stamped circular design to the upper and lower board. Lower page edges un-trimmed. An excellent better than very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. The contents, with the previous owner's small Toronto address label to the front endpaper and a very faint marginal stain to page 553, are otherwise remarkably clean and bright throughout. A lovely example, which due to the weight of the 850 page text block and relatively thin binding, makes copies in collectable original condition exceptionally scarce in commerce. The first English translation of this major work of Russian literature, and the first in a series of translations of Dostoevsky's work by Constance Garnett. One of at least three known binding variants [no priority established], this copy with 'The Novels of Dostoevsky' to the upper spine and the imprint of the London publisher Henry Frowde at the bottom [presumably they purchased the colonial edition publishing rights], but retaining the William Heinemann blind-stamp to the lower board and the William Heinemann sheets in entirety. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. N° de réf. du vendeur 15918

Description de l'article : William Heinemann, London, 1912. First edition in English of Dostoevsky's masterpiece, described by Freud as "the most magnificent novel ever written." Octavo, original cloth. Translated into English by Constance Garnett. In very good condition, name to the front free endpaper. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Scarce and desirable, with only a handful appearing at auction in past 80 years. Published less than four months before his death, Dostoevsky's masterpiece The Brothers Karamazov has come to be considered one of the supreme achievements in the worldwide literary canon. Set in 19th-century Russia, the philosophical and spiritual drama enters deeply into mankind's universal struggles with morality, faith, reason and free will. Centered around the greedy and negligent Fyodor Karamazov and his three sons, the harrowing tale relays the details of a long-awaited family reunion which ends tragically in Fyodor's murder. One of the most widely influential pieces of literature ever published, the work has attracted a range of admirers including Albert Einstein, Martin Heidegger, Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, and Sigmund Freud who referred to it as "the most magnificent novel ever written." In an essay on the novel written after the Russian Revolution and the First World War, Nobel Prize-winning author Hermann Hesse described Dostoevsky as not a "poet" but a "prophet" "No writer has been more important to the understanding and/or reception of Russian literature in the West than Fedor Dostoevsky" (The Cambridge Companion to Modern Russian Culture, p.184). There have been several film adaptations of the novel including the 1915 silent film directed by Victor Tourjansky and the 1958 film directed by Richard Brooks, starring Yul Brynner and William Shatner. Description de l'article : William Heinemann, 1912. Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. First english language edition of this iconic title in the exceptionally rare first state (with the full name of the author on the spine as opposed to just the surname as found in later issues). Exceptionally rare with a handful of copies recorded at auction making this much rarer than the later published American first. Originally published in Russky Viestnik (The Russian Messenger) from 1879-80, this first English language edition is translated by Constance Garnett, the first book in her series "The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky." 8vo, adverts to verso, blind 'presentation copy' stamp to title-page, original red cloth with decoratively tooled spine, spine slightly faded, a little rubbing and very slight insignificant marking to covers and joints, insignificant adhesion to final page, pages remarkably clean with no foxing or inscriptions. Description de l'article : The Macmillan Company, New York, 1912. First American edition. One of the towering classics of Russian literature. First translated into English in the 20th century by Constance Garnett, as the first book in her series "The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky." Constance Garnett is responsible for introducing many works of Russian literature to English readers for the first time, including books by Tolstoy and Turgenev. "[her] translations read easily. her versions were in many cases pioneering versions."(Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translations). A quick search on Americana Exchange reveals a single copy of this first US edition (using the British sheets) sold by Swann in 2017 for $10,000. The British edition appears equally rare. A Very Good+ copy. Spine darkened and chipped at the crown, minor soiling to the boards (and an ink mark to the rear board), internal contents generally in excellent shape. Top edge gilt. One of the great works of world literature. Dealing with questions of belief and faith in a seemingly ambivalent world, "The Brothers Karamazov" has influenced countless writers and thinkers. Freud called it "the most magnificent novel ever written" and Nietzsche ironically said Dostoyevsky was "the only psychologist . from whom I had something to learn; he ranks among the most beautiful strokes of fortune in my life." The book took over two years for Dostoyevsky to write - he died months after its publication. "What makes [you] read it too, is sheer breathless interest in the people and the drama. every man, woman, and child introduced in these 840 pages is human - convincingly and horribly human." (Contemporary New York Times Review.). N° de réf. du vendeur 1877

Description de l'article : Macmillan, 1912. Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Translated by the great Constance Garnett, the first book in her series The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky. ** First edition in English, American issue - comprised of the British sheets that were published in May 1912 with a cancel title leaf. Both English language releases are difficult to come by in any condition approaching collectability standards. Publisher's blue-grey cloth, spine gilt-titled, top edge gilt retained albeit a bit dusty, minor rubbing, minor wear to spine ends and corners, spine lightly toned, a few old owner notes in the text and owner signature dated 1928, otherwise internally quite clean. Those points notwithstanding, it s a sound, unrepaired Near Fine copy and a quasi-miraculous survival in this condition. Various wretched copies have hit the scene since a beat up one achieved $10,000 at a 2017 auction. This is an excellent copy of an important work priced so soberly that it verges on abdication of fiduciary responsibility to my progeny.***** Brothers Karamazov is a real literary landmark that had a heavy influence on writers and thinkers of all stripes. This is a must-own title spanning various fields of collecting from literature to philosophy or simply for a great highspot collection. Fyodor is one of the great geniuses of the last few centuries. His painfully accurate revelations about human psychology and the ever present inner strife between our moral, rational, and passionate natures strike one s core like a pinpoint super charged lightning bolt. ****PLEASE CONTACT US FOR BETTER PRICING.
