Vendeur : Captain Ahab's Rare Books (Stephenson, VA, Etats-Unis)
Description de l'article : Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929. First American Edition. First Printing, with the Scribner's seal on copyright page and no legal disclaimer on p.[x]. Octavo (19.5cm); black cloth, with gold title labels on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [x],355,[3]pp. Inscribed by the author to Hemingway scholar and novelist Michael Murphy on the front endpaper: "To Mike Muphy / good luck / Ernest Hemingway." Faint, semi-circular mark to rear cover, else a fresh, very Near Fine copy. In the first state dustjacket, unclipped (priced $2.50), with some light rubbing and a handful of tiny tears; very Near Fine. Folded and laid into this copy is a short, typed letter of provenance, signed by Michael Murphy: "This copy of A Farewell To Arms was signed for me by Hemingway in 1957 at his home outside Havana. Michael Murphy." Housed in a bespoke half-morocco slipcase and chemise, the colors matching the blue and orange on the dustjacket. Hemingway's third novel, recounting a love affair between an American expatriate and an English nurse, set during the Italian campaign of World War I. This copy inscribed to Hemingway scholar and biographer Michael Murphy, author of Hemingway: The Best of What He Had (1974), Hemingway: A 75th Anniversary Tribute (1974, with Vincent Starrett), and Murphy on Hemingway (1978). Murphy is best known for his 1977 novel Hemingsteen: A Novel Based on the Life of Ernest Hemingway. "In a one-page introduction to Hemingsteen, Murphy explains that the "idea for this book originated with Hemingway in his statement about the Oak Park novel," which would have been explicitly autobiographical and, perhaps ironically, for that reason was never written.Murphy's novel seeks to do what much fan fiction does: fill in the gaps. Where hints or innuendos are suggested or where unresolved conundrums or mysteries linger, the writer of fan fiction steps in" (McFarland, Ron. Appropriating Hemingway: Using Him as a Fictional Character, p.32). An attractive association copy of Hemingway's first best-seller. Hanneman 8a; Connolly 100. N° de réf. du vendeur 3861

Edité par Grosset & Dunlap, New York (1932)
Quantité disponible : 1
Vendeur : Ernestoic Books and Bindery (Clarence, NY, Etats-Unis)
Description de l'article : Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1932. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Extraordinary Association copy, signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title page: " For Henry Pfeiffer, yours very truly, Ernest Hemingway, Piggot-December 31-1932". Henry Pfeiffer was a philanthropist and uncle to Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. Paul Pfeiffer, Pauline's father, and uncles Henry and G. A. founded Pfeiffer Pharmaceutical Company. Paul left the company and moved his family to Piggott, Arkansas to make a life for his family. This copy was signed and inscribed in Piggott, the family's estate, to his wife's uncle Henry. Ernest's marriage to Pauline and the influence of the Pfeiffer family was incredibly important to Hemingway's life, career, and literary endeavors. During the course of their thirteen year marriage, Hemingway started and/or finished "A Farewell to Arms", "Winner Take Nothing", "Green Hills of Africa", "To Have and Have Not", "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories", and "For Whom the Bells Tolls". Pauline's father Paul even renovated the family barn in Piggott into a workspace for Hemingway. Uncle G. A. Pfeiffer was the couple's benefactor, having purchased homes for them in Key West and Paris, as well as purchasing cars for them, and more importantly, financing an African Safari in 1933 which became the basis of Hemingway's novels, "Green Hills of Africa", as well as for the short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". This book, A Farewell to Arms was dedicated to G. A. Pfeiffer by Hemingway. "A Farewell to Arms" also has a Pfeiffer connection with the dramatic ending that was based on his wife Pauline's difficult birth to their son Patrick. To say that the Pfeiffer family had a major impact on Hemingway's career would be an understatement. This is an outstanding association copy to a member of the family that paved the way for some of Hemingway's most famous works and helped him to become one of America's greatest writers. Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication with Certificate Number: Z32467. "A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway. Reprint edition. Published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1932, the same year as the Paramount production of the same name, starring Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper. Measures 8" x 5.25", 355 pages with additional pages of publisher's advertisements. With black and white pictoral endsheets with scenes from the movie. With its original dust jacket. The dust jacket is in very good condition. Light rubbing to the jacket with two small tears at the edges of the front panel. Sunning to the spine with small chips to the edges. A few tape remnants to the verso of the jacket. The book is in very good condition. Minor shelf wear to the boards with vertical crease to the front board. Sunning and soiling to the spine. The front board is slightly cocked. Faint foxing to the fore-edges. The textblock is gently toned, largely clean, unmarked, and complete. The binding is sound. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase. Signed by Author(s). N° de réf. du vendeur 003379

Vendeur : Raptis Rare Books, ABAA/ ILAB (Palm Beach, FL, Etats-Unis)
Description de l'article : Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929. Signed limited first edition of this early Hemingway classic, which established him among the American masters. Tall octavo, original white parchment over green boards. One of 510 copies signed by Ernest Hemingway, this is number 128. Near fine in the rare original slipcase which is in very good condition, lacking the small bottom panel. A nice example. Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. Farewell To Arms is the only signed limited edition of Ernest Hemingway's works. N° de réf. du vendeur 95264

A Farewell to Armsis a novel byErnest Hemingway set during theItalian campaignofWorld War I. First published in 1929, it is afirst-person accountof an American, Frederic Henry, serving as alieutenant("tenente") in the ambulance corps of theItalian Army. The title is taken from a poem by the 16th-century English dramatistGeorge Peele. The novel, set against the backdrop of World War I, describes a love affair between the expatriate Henry and an English nurse, Catherine Barkley. Its publication ensured Hemingway's place as a modern American writer of considerable stature.[1]The book became his first best-seller,[2]and has been called "the premier American war novel from that debacle World War I."[3]The novel has been adapted a number of times, initially for the stage in 1930; as a film in 1932 and again in 1957, and as a three-part television miniseries in 1966. The 1996 filmIn Love and War, directed byRichard Attenboroughand starringChris O'DonnellandSandra Bullock, depicts Hemingway's life in Italy as an ambulance driver in the events prior to his writing ofA Farewell to Arms.
