Toning and light soiling to covers; darkening and small chip to title label. Previous owner bookplate to front paste down. Pages toned, and foxing to prelims and terminals. Hinge at half-title page is partially over-opened. Housman's first book of poetry. Initially met with slow sales, this this title would soon rapidly grow in popularity within the first decade of its publication, spawning many parodies, and even inspiring composers to set poems to music. His second book, of which only 500 copies were printed, 150 of these being used for the first American edition issued in 1897. Sixty-three poems. The title label on the spine is in the primary state, there being a total of four variants (see Carter, Sparrow and White).Armorial bookplate (Edward Southwell Trafford) on front pastedown, as well as a later small nameplate. A 5 cm tear to the top edge of the front free endpaper has been repaired in a fairly crude manner. Title label scuffed, but most of the lettering is intact. Covers rubbed at the edges. Good. These illustrations had originally been published, sans text, by the First Edition Club in 1924; this edition allows us for the first time to see them unified with Housman's text - a 'treachery', the introduction notes, given that the author having returned the designs as ones he 'did not like at all'.
