Quantité disponible : 1
Vendeur : Riverby Books (Fredericksburg, VA, Etats-Unis)
Description de l'article : Paris. Charles Gosselin. Brussles [Bruxelles] Societe Belge de Librairie. Hauman, Cattoir et ce, 1840. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. De la Democratie en Amerique par Alexis de Tocqueville, avocat a la cour royale de Paris, l un des auteurs du livreintitule: Du Systeme Penitentiaire aux Etats-Unis; orne d une carte d Amerique. Quatrieme edition First part: Bruxelles. Societe Belge de Librairie, etc. Hauman, Cattoir et Ce. 1837. Second part: Paris. Charles Gosselin. 1840 [first edition] 5 volumes. Uniform bindings. Text is in the original French in all 5 volumes. Leather spines and corners, marbled paper over boards. Spines have black leather title label stamped in gold, ornate gold decoration on the rest of the spine. Volumes are numbered 1-5. Some minor rubbing and wear to the leather, shelfwear to marbled paper, but overall quite attractive on the shelf. Bindings tight, text blocks square and secure. Measures about 4 x 6.5 inches. There are a few pencil marks in the margins, but nothing detrimental. A few foxed pages but overall nice and clean. The binder has made a veritable de Tocqueville-Stew of these books. Lovely, uniform bindings, numbered 1-5, but they are shuffled. The volumes numbered 1, 3, 5 are a 1837 Brussels edition of Part 1. [4th edition] Volumes 2 and 4 are the 1840 Gosselin (Paris) edition of Part 2. [first edition] It s all here, though the binder has complicated things. De Tocqueville published the first part of Democratie en Amerique in 1835. The 1835 first edition was printed in Paris by Gosselin as a two volume set. What I have here is a 1837 Brussels edition in three volumes, calling itself the fourth edition. De Tocqueville published the second part of Democratie en Amerique in 1840. The 1840 first edition was published in Paris by Gosselin as a two volume set. What I have here is that 1840 first edition, two volume set. Volume 1 has a large folding, hand-colored map, in need of restoration at the creases. IX + 333 pages. Page 289 is the final page of the body of the work; Notes on the text begin on page 293, and those notes plus Table de Matieres fill the rest of the pages. Title page dated 1837. Printed in Brussels. Map is dated 1836. Volume 2: title page dated 1840. Title page says Seconde Partie / Tome Premiere / Edition Originale . Printed in Paris, Librairie de Charles Gosselin. 263 pages. Volume 3: title page dated 1837. Printed in Brussels, like the first volume. 275 pages. Volume 4: title page dated 1840. Printed in Paris. Seconde Partie / Tome Deuxieme / Edition Originale. 295 pages. Volume 5: title page dated 1837. Printed in Brussels. 318 pages. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. N° de réf. du vendeur U-382

Edité par J. & H. Langley, Philadelphia (1841)
Quantité disponible : 1
Vendeur : Arch Bridge Bookshop (Bellows Falls, VT, Etats-Unis)
Description de l'article : J. & H. Langley, Philadelphia, 1841. Leather Bound. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 4th Edition. "Democracy in America . in two volumes: " Vol. I" and "Part the Second", 4th edition. Volume I translated by John C. Spencer, Volume II translated by Henry Reeve. Both volumes newly rebound in full calf leather. This 1840/1841 publication is very scarce. "Democracy in America by Alexis. de Tocqueville is a general study of on American society. He arrived in May of 1831 and spent nine months traveling within the United States collecting a variety of information on American society such as: its religious, political and economic character." Volume I includes a large foldout colorized map of the Census of 1840, its overall condition is near fine. Some light foxing spots on edge of title page. On several text pages there are a few small foxing spots on edges, not affecting the text. Overall condition of text pages is near fine. 494 pages in volume I. Volume II: On about 18 pages there a few small foxing spots on page edges, not affecting the text. Overall condition of text pages better than very good to near fine. 355 pages in volume II. Book's impact: "Democracy in America" was first published in two volumes in 1835. It was immediately popular in both Europe and in the U.S. while also having a profound impact on the French population. By the twentieth century it had become a classic work of political science, social science, and history. Finally, in the introduction to his translation of the book Harvard Professor Harvey C. Mansfield calls it 'at once the best book ever written on democracy and the best ever written on America'" These two full calf light brown leather bindings are an example of current fine leather bindings at its very best. Rebound in June 2019 by The Chester Bookworm in Vermont in two volumes in full calf leather supplied by J. Hewit and Son of Edinburgh, Scotland. The leather supplied Hewit was undyed and the bookbinder dyed it with German analine dyes, resulting in leather having a light brown followed by a mid-brown and finally a dark brown. This has resulted in the leather having an "aged look" with the three browns showing. The two volumes have hollow back spines with five raised bands, with gilt titling on the spines, and blind tooling on the boards and spine for decoration. The endpapers are hand marbled from Il Papiro in Venice, Italy. N° de réf. du vendeur 8959

Description de l'article : New York : Adlard and Saunders, 1839. Hardcover. Etat : Used: Acceptable. 3rd American ed., rev. and corr. 3rd American ed. Revised and Corrected. Bound in publisher's green cloth. Rebacked, with renewed spine cloth. xvi, 455 p. Foxing throughout. English translation of "De la democratie en Amerique," first published in French in 1835. Tocqueville's extremely important and influential analysis of American democracy is "one of the most important texts in political literature." (PMM). Democracy in America is "the first systematic and empirical study of the effects of political power on modern society" (Nisbet). Overall, Tocqueville's conclusions were that the trend of history would irresistibly lean towards equality; and that the future of France, indeed of the Western world, was bound up with the acceptance of democratic principles, these being the one effective means of avoiding submission to tyranny (Harvey and Heseltine, 711). Translated by Henry Reeve, Esq. ; with an original preface and notes by John C. Spencer. N° de réf. du vendeur 1908060024

Description de l'article : Nova Science Publishers Inc, United States, 2019. Hardback. Etat : New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Democracy in America, written by French lawyer Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831, documents his travels through America where he finds an equality unknown in Europe. When Alexis de Tocqueville came to study Democracy in America, the trial of nearly a half-century of the working of our system had been made, and it had been proved, by many crucial tests, to be a government of liberty regulated by law, with such results in the development of strength, in population, wealth, and military and commercial power, as no age had ever witnessed. Democracy in America was received at once by the scholars and thinkers of Europe as a profound, impartial, and entertaining exposition of the principles of popular, representative self-government. This book continues to be as important today as when it was first written. N° de réf. du vendeur AAG9781536152968
