[John Lizars (1787? - 1860), surgeon, and son of Daniel Lizars, publisher. The above is his best known work, and the plates were engraved by his brother William under John's close supervision. "Although the letterpress is necessarily out of date, the numerous and beautifully executed plates are still valuable to the anatomical student." DNB. This was one of the first British systematic atlases of anatomy: as Lizars comments in the preface to the first edition [1822-6], "hitherto we have no complete system of anatomical plates, and those already published do not embrace surgical anatomy." The plates were drawn by John Lizars, whose aim was "the most scrupulous correctness," and engraved by his brother William, who was a master of his craft, and whose work included some of the plates for Audubon's Birds of America. The dissections were the author's, except for two of the hernias, which were done by Sir Astley Cooper. In the first edition of 1822-6, in order to reduce the cost, the text was published in a separate octavo volume (which is often lacking) and only the plates of the brain were coloured. In the above edition, the text is incorporated. The above work retains the title to the first edition and only describes this as a 'new and improved edition' on a preface leaf. N° de réf. du libraire
