(The subject of this book, R. P. Bonington, is one of the most interesting painters in the English Romantic movement, and, with Constable and Turner, it might be said of him that he gave English landscape painting the unique status it enjoyed in the early part of the 19th century. Though born in England, most of.Bonington s creative life was spent in France, and it was largely through him that the French were introduced to naturalistic painting, and artists, such as Delacroix, turned to literature and history for the subjects of their pictures. At the famous Paris Salon of 1824, Bonington and Constable were fellow exhibitors, and though Bonington received a gold medal for the work he exhibited there, he was accused by French critics of being a corrupting influence and of prejudicing young French artists against the Classical tradition of their country.
Immensely gifted, Bonington was virtually self- taught and his work has a brilliance and freshness which few, if any artists, have ever equalled. In this book the stress has been placed on the kind of work which shows Bonington s unique talent. His achievement in watercolour is discussed, and the point is made that the clear and luminous quality of his oil painting derives basically from his watercolour technique. Though in his own time Bonington s history and subject paintings were considered his outstanding achievement, they seem now to have lost the novelty and attraction they once had and for this reason only a few of such works have been included among the illustrations. It is the landscapes and coast scenes - the things that exerted a decisive influence on the early style of Corot - that seem to the modern eye the most original and enduring.
