Irby and Mangles were two British naval officers who embarked from England for a tour of the continent in 1816. They expanded their trip to include Egypt and traveled up the Nile. They met with Bankes and Legh in Aleppo, with whom they became the earliest of modern explorers of Syria. They traveled through the Holy Land and became ill with dysentery. In December 1818 they traveled by ship to Marseilles on a long, seventy-six day ordeal.

A vivid travel work recounting the journeys of two ex-Navy officers.Ink inscription of William Westcott to the title page of 'Stokers and Pokers', with the name of the author written on the dedication in Westcott's hand. In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Boards are a little faded. Rubbing to the spine, joints, and extremities, a little loss to the extremities. Ink inscription to the title page and dedication leaf of 'Stokers and Pokers'. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and clean with only a few occasional spots. Good. book.
