Etat : Fine. ~ Foreword by Nuno Júdice for this edition ~ COMPLETE RUN BOUND IN ONE VOLUME of one of the most important Portuguese literary journals, representing a platform for launching aesthetic proposals common to the "old" and "new" modernist generations: that of «Orpheu» (1915) and that of «Presença» (1927). Directed by Almada Negreiros, Sudoeste had three issues, published in Lisbon between June and November 1935. A fourth issue has been planned but never published. The first two issues are unipersonal, presented as «Cadernos de Almada Negreiros» and written by Almada from one end to the other with just a quote borrowed from a book of Norwegian oceanographer Johan Hjort shoehorned in between. The third and final number is the most significant from a historical-literary point of view, collecting works by 16 collaborators, those of the extinct magazine «Orpheu» and those of «Presença», then still being issued. The essay texts published by Almada in the first two issues of the magazine undergo the purpose of analyzing the European cultural, social and political moment in a historical context marked by the rise and triumph of nationalist and dictatorial regimes (Mussolini, Hitler, Salazar), but in opposition to the basic principles of these regimes. This is followed by one of the best-known texts from Southwest, «Civilization and Culture», in which Almada defines civilization as "a collective phenomenon" and culture as "an individual phenomenon". Cf. Dutra Faria: «SW. Sudoeste - Europa-Portugal» in Fradique, Lisboa, nº 73, 1935 & Clara Cabrée Rocha: «Sudoeste» in MODERN!SMO. Arquivo Virtual da Geração de Orpheu ~ The 2th issue inserts 2 plates with the drawings «O Céu» and «Madrid 30» by Almada, very rare because they were suppressed by the censorship. The 3rd one bears two plates with drawings by Sarah Affonso (1899-1983) and the expressionist painter Mário Eloy (1900-1951). ~ Publisher's wrappers ~ VII+31+[3]p ; 44+[4]p : 44+[2]p+16p ~ 25x18x2cm. ~ In fine condition with just a small closed tear on toe of spine ~ LANGUAGE: Português / Portuguese Literature / Modernism / Avant-garde // We accept PayPal & EU bank transfer in EUROS.
