Description du livre : Walter J. Black for Classics Club, New York, 1946. Hardcover. État : Good. No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Honoré de Balzac (20 May 1799 ¿ 18 August 1850) was a French novelist and playwright. In this book, Balzac transposes the story of King Lear to 1820s Paris in order to rage at a society bereft of all love save the love of money. The centrality of a father in this novel matches Balzac's own position¿not only as mentor to his troubled young secretary, Jules Sandeau, but also the fact that he had (most likely) fathered a child, Marie-Caroline, with his otherwise-married lover, Maria Du Fresnay. Grey cloth covers; soiling/foxing; bumped corners/edges; spine sunned, bumped top/bottom but still tight; 301p., aged; foxing/soiling; notation ffep, p301, o/w internally clean. Honoré de Balzac 20 May 1799 ¿ 18 August 1850 was a French novelist and playwright. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pere Goriot is the poignant story of a father who ruins himself financially and spiritually for the advancement of his socially ambitious-and utterly ungrateful-daughters. In Eugenie Grandet, Balzac applies his brilliant psychological insight to a study of the provincial bourgeois-in this case, the naive Eugenie dazzled by her first love, exploited by her avaricious father, and misled by her sophisticated and fickle fiance. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- Rich burgundy color, gilt decorated covers; recreation of The Madame de Pompadour Binding, royal coat of arms surrounded by lavish floral framework done in lustrous gilt foil. raised bands on spine; matching ribbon page marker; deckle endpapers. (undated-previous owner penciled date of 1978); Slight fading to endpapers; light foxing mostly on page edges, o/w internally clean; 516p, uncut page fore-edges; dated p516 and rep, o/w internally clean. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Included: International Collectors Library Presents.review sheet (1 page).
