Mosher, brief prefatory note by James Russell Lowell, toast to Omar Khayyam by Theodore Watts-Dunton. Rendered into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald, with a biographical sketch of Fitzgerald by W. Irving Way. Edward FitzGerald, (born March 31, 1809, Bredfield, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, Eng.?died June 14, 1883, Merton, Norfolk), English writer, best known for his Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, which, though it is a very free adaptation and selection from the Persian poet's verses, stands on its own as a classic of English literature. It is one of the most frequently quoted of lyric poems, and many of its phrases, such as 'A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou' and 'The moving finger writes,' passed into common currency. - Britannica.

Opposite it is a coloured illustration. 52 pages. Reproduced from manuscript by McLagan & Cumming, Chromo-lithographers & Printers, Edinburgh. Boards are worn. Front hinge is broken. Ffep has small bookseller's stamp. Half-title has previous owner's name and address in pencil. Some pages have been taped at the binding with microfibre tape. Rear free endpaper has large chip missing.

Hard back binding in publisher's original russet cloth covers, gilt title lettering to the spine and to the front cover. 8vo. 7½'' x 5½''. Every page has red and black calligraphy by Bernard Way, the title-page almost wholly so with tipped-in colour plate opposite. Reproduced from manuscript by McLagan & Cumming, Chromo-lithographers & Printers, Edinburgh. The Rubáiyát over 52 unnumbered pages carrying the 75 quatrains of Edward Fitzgerald's version. Light surface damp stain to the foot of the spine and along the bottom edges, this has not marked the interior of the book. Member of the P.B.F.A. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám.
