Hardcover. [2] preliminary pages; 100 leaves of plates, [2] pages. This is an extremely rare volume of 100 lithographed plates depicting French Civil and Military Costumes of the French Monarchy. This is being sold as a collection of plates. Good as a collection of plates (Covers are not present; spine strip is heavily worn and chipped; title page is absent; endpapers are heavily chipped and starting to detach; bookblock edges are toned/scuffed/smudged; interior has some toning and foxing with occasional smudging; bookblock appears solid.).

An incomplete set of 80 original hand colored lithographs of the robes and costumes worn by French aristocracy, clergy, and judiciary from the 13th - 19th centuries. From a series of 380 lithographs executed by Hippolyte Le Comte and published 1820-21 by Francois Delpech. Delpech operated the most popular lithographic print shop in Paris; LeComte was a French painter best known for his large scale historical paintings and ballet designs; the caricaturist J.J. Grandville worked in his studio. Approximately 8 x10 , signed in the plates -- bound in period board covers, with several plates detached. Covers heavily rubbed; plates are in good condition -- age-toned but the images are bright; occasional light foxing. Inquire for more scans. Plates 109-180 consecutively are bound in period board covers; another 8 plates are loose: 10, 64-67, 348, 364, 367. Several of the loose plates are trimmed about 1/2".

Il s'agrémente de 190 [sur 192] fines planches lithographiées avec rehauts du temps en couleurs donnant à voir des costumes masculins (civils et militaires) et féminins depuis 1230 jusqu'à 1638. ''C'est l'un des premiers livres de cette importance produits par le procédé alors nouveau de la lithographie. [L'ouvrage complet comporte 380 planches au total]''. Lith. de Delpech". 37 lithogr. plates (numbered 1-37, complete thus?), monogrammed "H.te L.". 2) H. Bellangé. "Fantaisies par Bellangé". [Paris, Gilhaut, 1829]. 12 lithogr. plates, signed "H.te Bellange". Half calf with printed cover label. A fine collection of two lithographed series: genre scenes with riders, coaches, soldiers, hunting, salons, etc. The lithographer Hippolyte Lecomte (1781-1857) is known for his landscapes and genre and history paintings, "but mainly for his battles and scenes of historical representation" (cf. Thieme/B. XXII, 526). - The French military painter Hippolyte Bellangé (1800-66) "was capable of painting anecdotal scenes and combining the most comical situations with the most serious ones. His style made him extremely popular as a painter of French military success. Apart from his numerous paintings he created a body of some 600 lithographs" (cf. Thieme/B.
