He was captured by Spanish Corsairs in 1518 near Crete and was taken to Rome and imprisoned. He was presented to the Pope Leo X and for one reason or another was freed and Baptized, given the semi-christian name Leo of Africa or Leo Africanus. This work on Africa was originally published in Italian in 1550. It was reprinted several times and in several languages. This small edition was published in Leyden (Holland) in 1632. Africanus book is considered the first book written by aa person of African descent. It is famously praised by Charles Blockson, for whom the African-American Collection at Tempe University is named, as being the cornerstone of any collection of African history.
