Softcover. Etat : g to vg. Limited edition. 1/2000. Large quarto (11 3/4 x 9 1/4"). 117, [3]pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over blind wrappers. Red and black-lettered title page within decorative frame. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Book housed in its original green cloth lined slipcase. Illustrated with twelve striking tissue-guarded mounted plates in full color, "Fleur-de-Neige et d'Autres Contes de Grimm" is a celebrated collection of twelve folktales by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who spent their lives collecting and publishing folklore during the 19th century. Kay Nielsen's fantasy illustrations are bold, and vibrant - often reproduced by a 4-color process which set him apart from his contemporaries who typically used a 3-color process. His art is characterized by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre quality and his ephemeral illustrations are intricately inventive, flirting with implausibility. One of 2,000 numbered copies, of which this is No. 794. Some foxing to slipcase. Minor rubbing to head and tail of spine. Book block starting. Text in French. Slipcase in overall good, dust-jacket and blind wrappers in good+, interior in very good condition.

"In an attempt to reinvigorate the market for gift books after the war, Hodder & Stoughton resumed the publishing of Kay Nielsen's books, though on a more modest scale. In 1924 they published a work that Nielsen had begun in 1912, Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, including sixteen stories illustrated with twelve watercolors. Nielsen returned to London, and in 1925 his final book for Hodder & Stoughton, Hansel and Gretel, appeared with twelve color plates" (Susan E. Meyer, A Treasury of the Great Children's Book Illustrators, p. 206). Larkin, p. 13.
