1686, 3rd edition. (hardcover) Good. [title leaf], [10], 473pp. 32mo. Diminutive volume, measuring 2.5" wide x 4.5" tall x 1.25" thick. Bound in full vellum; title compartments in leather to spine, lettered in gilt. Entire spine with diamond-ruled decorative pattern in gilt; gold much rubbed and faded. The binding was presumably done or, at the very least, extensively repaired in the mid-19th century given the fact that there is a bookplate on the front-pastedown dated 1867 with portions of what appears to be an original leather spine laid beneath. Vellum dust-dirtied; rubbed; circular dirtied spot at head of top cover, presumably from a long-since removed sticker. Covers stiff, somewhat splayed. All edges of textblock done in blue marbling; top edge notably dust-darkened. Marbled eps. Armorial bookplate to front-pastedown that reads "Esperance En Dieu / 1867"; common enough in antiquarian collections. Textblock surprisingly clean through; some dirtying and toning to the prelims; some dampstaining at the foot of the textblock early. Else internally clean. Text in the original Latin on the left within black-border textbox; vulgar Italian translation on the right. Title page device of a wood-cut vignette of a ship. Overall, an attractive, uncommon antiquarian copy of this text. This issue being the 3rd Edition of this work. First published in 1657 in Valenza. Second issue in 1670 in Venice.

The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format. Louis Elzevier, the founder of the firm, produced his first book in Leiden in 1583. The 'golden age' of Elzevier printing was between 1620 and 1680. The Elzevier dynasty probably produced their last publication in 1770. Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, born Gaius Caecilius or Gaius Caecilius Cilo (61 c. 113), better known as Pliny the Younger, was a lawyer, author, and magistrate of Ancient Rome. Pliny's uncle, Pliny the Elder, helped raise and educate him. Pliny the Younger wrote hundreds of letters, of which 247 survive and are of great historical value. Some are addressed to reigning emperors or to notables such as the historian Tacitus. Pliny served as an imperial magistrate under Trajan and his letters to Trajan provide one of the few surviving records of the relationship between the imperial office and provincial governors. Hardcover. Etat : Good. Pliny the Younger. Caecilius Secundus Plinius. Epistles. C. Plinii Caecilii Secundi Novocomensis Epistolarum Libri Decem. Nunc quidem ab innumeris variorum exemplarum collation repurgati. [printer's device] Apud.Seb. Gryphium Lugduni, 1551. Octavo 464, [16] pages. Later vellum with chip on one corner, gilt-lettered spine-label, slightly chipped at edges. Some ink numbering in margins, much red pencil underlining, varying margin stains. Adams P1544. Besides the ten books of Pliny s letters, this volume contains Pliny s Panegyric on Trajan, his book on illustrious men, Suetonius Tranquillus on illustrious grammarians, Suetonius on clarity of speech, and Julius Obsequens Ab Anno Urbis Conditae Quingentesimoquinque (550) Prodigiorum Liber. This last work is called imperfect and indeed differs from the currently received text, at least in that names of some of the Consuls are omitted. Some of the prodigies involve shining discs moving through the sky, classical UFOs. The letters between Trajan and Pliny (Book 10) are of great interest because one exchange, where Pliny asks for advice about what to do about people accused of being Christians and Trajan tells him not to go out looking for possible Christians, but that he has to bring in for questioning anyone accused of being a Christian. If someone is denounced as Christian, Trajan saya to release them if they deny the accusation. This is one of the very few non-Christian sources about normal persecution.

Hardcover. Etat : Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 4to. [140] leaves. Roman letter interspersed with occasional quotations in Greek. 27 lines. Printer's mark at end of book IX, and at end. 18th century vellum; rebacked. A distinguished redaction of the celebrated letters of Pliny the Younger (c.6I-c.112 AD) by the noted Renaissance scholar Filippo Beroaldo (1453-1505). The nine books of letters on a variety of subjects composed in the style of short essays, are a major source for our knowledge of the times. The famous letter 16 (book 6), addressed to his friend Tacitus, describes the eruption of Vesuvius on 24 August AD 79 during which the author's uncle, Pliny the Elder, died. Letter 59 (book 10) to the Emperor Trajan on the treatment of the Christians, is considered the earliest external account of Christian worship, and the fullest statement of the reasons for the execution of Christians; Trajan expresses his approval in his reply in the following letter (60). The volume concludes with the panegyric to Trajan, delivered when Pliny took office as consul for the year 100, in which the emperor is favourably compared to the tyrannical Domitian who preceded him. Traces of marginal waterstaining throughout, title margin neatly repaired without loss, otherwise a clean copy with occasional manuscript notes in Latin penned into blank margins in several neat humanist hands.
