Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 280pp. Flyleaf has been removed. signed on title page. The history books for WWII denotes a small chapter that records an incident that could well be an epic sea battle between an Australian light cruiser and a heavily-armed merchant ship of the German Kreigsmarine. On 19th November 1941, this cruiser met up with the infamous Kormoran. They must have been evenly matched because the outcome resulted in that they sunk each other at the same time. There were a few survivors that managed to escape in lifeboats, from the Kormoran but none from the cruiser. In memory of the HMAS Sydney and her gallant crew who laid down their lives to put a stop to such predators of the world's sea-lanes. Their ship and lives were given to save countless thousands of future sailors. Foreword This book is arguably the prequel to the 'Adventure' series, in that Captain Von Meir of the German Q ship the MV Schelzwig, bore a striking resemblence to the 'Adventure' series character John Grey. The Schlezwig and the Brooklea are one, with the unfortunate link that certain crew-members who survived from the Schezwig, later became the the masters of the Brooklea. When John Grey stepped on board the Brooklea for the first time, he was a spectre to his superiors on board, which was a catalyst for several incidents that was perpetrated agains him. John Grey experienced the backlash of Captain Von Meir's cruel treatment of Trewarthy, Cresswell and others whilst holding them captive. The story related within, tells about a dashing and very daring young German Navy officer who turned out to be the scourge of the Allied Navies during WW 2, and proved to be a deadly predator and killer of any unsuspecting merchant ships that sailed into his waters. His impeccable naval career was turned upside down when he was forced to pander to the dreaded martinets who latched onto him and blighted everything he touched. Von Meir was forced to turn pirate to subsidise his clandestine operations, and in doing so became the worlds' public enemy Nol. This meant that despite his honourable and heroic battles against his enemies, the Royal Navy and other allied navies, he was cast as a 'war criminal, with nowhere to hide or anybody to give him succour. This was because his ship was turned into a surface raider called a Q ship, sailing under different flags, pretended to be what she was not. In fact she was packed with enough fire power to sink many a warship crossing her sealane. When the tides and fortunes of the war turned against the German Nazi regime, and the British and Allies were beginning to get the upper hand, no so-called 'neutral' country that was an erstwhile friend of the German Nazi protocol, could be seen to help them any further, more so than the Itailans who not only defected to the Allies but also surrendered to them. Thus Von Meir's war efforts for his homeland were short lived, and he was to suffer the consequences of 'acting on orders' as dictated by his ultimate predators, the worlds most hated outfit in anybodies war machine, Germany's GESTAPO.
