FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. 282 x 190 mm. (11 x 7 1/2"). 6 p.l., 402, [4], 403-538, [2], 56, [18] pp.Translated from the Greek by Meredith Hanmer. Appealing 19th century panelled calf, gilt, raised bands, spine compartments with urn of flowers at center withing a lozenge of small tools, volute cornerpieces, two maroon morocco labels, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edge gilt. Printed in black letter and roman type. Title page with early ink owner's initials "J. G." A few contemporaneous marginal annotations (some slightly cropped). Brueggemann, p. 395; Hoffman II, 111; STC 10572; ESTC S121374. â Front joint somewhat worn, with one-inch crack at head (though the board still firmly attached), a little rubbing to extremities, but the binding lustrous, with an especially attractive and well-preserved spine. Top outer corner of title page with paper expertly replaced (no doubt where ownership inscription had been removed), text with not infrequent faint finger soiling and muted creases, isolated marginal dampstains of no consequence, the text perhaps lightly washed and pressed, but still a very presentable copy internally of an uncommonly seen first edition, with leaves that crackle when you turn them. This is the first printing in English of the work of three early Church Fathers, the text comprising a history of the first six centuries of the Christian church based on the writings of three learned historiographers: Socrates of Constantinople, Evagrius Scholasticus of Antioch, and--most notably--Eusebius, the famous fourth century bishop of Caesarea. It is the work of divinity scholar Meredith Hamner (1543-1604) of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, who undertook the project in order to support the so-called Elizabethan Religious Settlement, the name given to the religious and political system the queen put in place between about 1559 and 1563 that established the foundations of Anglicanism--and that effectively signaled the triumph of the English Reformation. The work also was an answer to attacks by English Catholics on the continent, providing, in the words of DNB, "an essential source for those protestants who wanted to show how rapidly the church had declined from its early purity." In addition to Eusebius' history covering the period from apostolic times to 324, the text includes its continuations by Socrates (fl. ca. 400) and Evagrius (ca. 536 - ca. 600), as well as a history attributed to Dorotheus, Bishop of Tyrus (d. 366), of the lives of the Prophets, Apostles, and 70 disciples. According to Hanmer biographer Angela Andreani, "'The Auncient Ecclesiasticall Histories' was a monumental enterprise," a stature it maintained for 200 years. Because it was a frequently consulted work, the book is now rarely encountered and generally in disagreeable condition when it is seen.

PLATO. The Greater Hippias: A Dialogue of Plato Concerning The Beautifull. London: H. Woodfall, 1759. First Edition. Quarto, 127 pages. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, fresh endpapers. In the Greater Hippias,In this book ,Plato describes SocratesandHippiasset out to find a definition for "beauty", but are destined to fail due to their inability to formulate an answer which encompasses the entire concept. The text has an anatreptic purpose-- that is, the result of the dialogue is to defeat commonly held opinions, without necessarily offering a resolution. The Platonic concept of something"good in and of itself" makes its first appearance in this early dialogue, which can be read as much as a serious philosophical work as a light satirical comedy with two actors.Translated by Floyer Sydenham, whose Platonic scholarship was credited with "'just criticism and extensive learning, an elegant taste, and a genius naturally philosophic' by Thomas Taylor. Leaves rippled somewhat with light foxing. In very good condition.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good+. First Edition. 4to (170 x 240mm). Pagination: [26], 476, [12]pp (of table). Signatures: A-Z(4), Aa-Zz(4), Aaa-Ppp(4).Woodcut printer s device of Rocolet (official printer of Paris) with crowned arms of Louis XIV and heraldry of the Foucault and Rocolet supported by muses and with their monograms on plaque. With dedication on title "Dediee a Monseigneur le Dauphin" and letter by Cousin. Contemporary French mottled brown calf by Rocolet or his workshop with the arms of Louis XIV (1643-1661), three fleur-de-lis, stamped in central medallion on covers, surrounded by a blind-tooled roll of fleur-de-lis, spine with five raised bands with a fleur-de-lis and tan morocco label, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; (title with small spots and residue not-severe, covers slightly bowed and corners lightly bumped, otherwise crisp and clean). This book is a fine specimen of such characteristic work from the Rocolet printers. This copy is exemplary for its royal provenance; this church history work which would have been presented at court to Louis XIV, and the dauphin, the king s son, Louis of France (1661-1711). The dauphin would have been about 14 years old at the time of this edition. Louis XIV, and other royals, often had works printed and bound for presentation in the court and gave them to special members in their circle. The title has an unidentified impression monogram "GDV" in lower right corner, probably dating to the 18th century. First edition and second volume of four containing Socrates Scholasticus s history of the Christian Church; this title part of a en ecclesiastical series by Rocolet published in 1675 and 1676; a reissue was made in Holland in 1686. This set is frequently found as the singular volume in usual institution catalogs. Louis Cousin was the translator of this great compilation corpus on church history written by the fifth century Church Father Socrates, which continued the great magnum opus of his forefather Eusebius of Caesarea. Among Cousin s law and theological acumen, he was an academician, royal censor, and president of the court of currencies "Cour des Monnoyes." This translation was highly regarded by his contemporaries as translations from the Greek of Church Father writings were becoming common in the ecclesiastical language of the Western Church. Pierre Rocolet, the printer by appointment for the city government, was active in Paris from 1640 until 1662, when his son-in-law Damien Foucault succeeded him in the business. Importantly, this work is one of the last that Foucault would produce under the workshop s name. He died in 1675 and his widow, Anne Bonjean, succeeded him until 1686 and then a son, Hilaire Foucault, continued until 1723. The Rocolet workshop was known for collaborating with select binders and gilders to producing luxurious decorated bindings, which dominated the French booksellers markets in the mid and late seventeenth century. This copy is a notable armorial presentation binding within the circle of Louis XIV.
