This book contains a lot of large, mostly full-color reproductions of action-packed illustrations by fine genre artists including Frank Frazetta, Hannes Bok, Edd Cartier, and Frank Kelly Freas (who wrote the introduction) -- art work originally used to illustrate the pulp-magazine and paperback fiction of L. Ron Hubbard (primarily 1934-1950), who certainly wrote a lot of it. This lovely, 194 pp. (with index) hardcover quarto may be worthwhile for these illustrations, alone. On the other hand, the fawning adoration of Hubbard's supposed "legendary mastery" of every profession to which he turned his hand, combined with the studious avoidance of any mention of what Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (1911-1986) was doing during what author Widder cryptically refers to as his "30-year hiatus" from fiction writing post-1950, verges on the creepy. Any nostalgia which author Widder may have felt for the pulp fiction of the 1930s notwithstanding, Hubbard was not a great fiction writer by any measure but volume. Even his early, shorter novels feel like the author is struggling to stretch a limited concept over too many pages. Though surely making a living as a writer requires energy, commitment, and talent of a sort, we cannot recall seeing any of Hubbard's works listed among any generally accepted "best 100" or even "best 200" 20th Century novels of ANY genre in which he labored. (Significantly, actual excerpts of Hubbard's supposedly deathless prose are limited here to an occasional sentence or two.) Hubbard's one undeniable stroke of genius was to observe that earnings could be sheltered from most taxation by establishing a "church," which he did in 1952, launching the controversial "Church of Spiritual Technology," better known as the "Church" of Scientology, to promulgate his development of the quasi-scientific discipline "Dianetics." In fact, publisher Galaxy Press was set up to publish and promote the fiction works of L. Ron Hubbard. The company was separated from Bridge Publications in the early 2000s, and is a business name of Author Services Inc. which is, in turn, completely owned by the Church of Spiritual Technology. (Bridge now focuses solely on Hubbard's Scientology and nonfiction works.) The relationship of talented illustrator Frank Kelly Freas (1922-2005), who contributes the preface here, with the Church of Scientology is unclear. He worked with Bridge Publications and headed up their "Illustrators of the Future" program, but does not appear to have been a full adherent of their dogma. While after his death a memorial was held at the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center in Hollywood, his widow states that Freas was not a Scientologist. Reduced from $20.

Thomas Mercer Jones (1795-1868)A powerful Canada Company land magnate, Jones was born in England and acquired business training there. By virtue of his London connections he obtained an appointment as a Company Commissioner from 1829-1852 and moved to York (Toronto) in 1829. He administered a large portion of this Company's lands, the 405,000 Huron Tract, and by 1839 wielded unrivaled authority in the area. At the height of his influence he moved his headquarters to a newly constructed, lavishly furnished Goderich mansion, later known as Park House. A controversial figure, he was dismissed in 1852 for exceeding his authority. He remained in Goderich as the Bank of Montreal agent until 1857 when he moved to Toronto where he died. Jones historical plaque.Frederick Widder was a Canada Company Commissioner from 1839-1864, and the son of a Canada Company London director, with family connections to royalty and the right Anglican connections. His moderate approach and financial innovations for the Canada Company would give him good standing with the pioneers of the Huron Tract and the reformers of Upper Canada. Widder's administrative talents and dedication to hard work allowed him to overshadow Thomas Mercer Jones and take the lead in the Canada Company. Widder's home, Lyndhurst, became a social hub of Toronto. Widder's wife, Elizabeth, entertained in style providing upper-class residents of York with refined entertainments redolent of British aristocratic and middle-class life.Donald McDonald was an Ontario civil engineer, land surveyor and political figure. He was a Liberal member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 to 1879. Donald McDonald was trained as a surveyor by his cousin John Macdonald (1794-1873). John, known as "Stout Mac" for his great strength, was the surveyor for the Canada Company. Donald McDonald was transferred to the clerical staff of the Canada Company, working first at Goderich, then, from at least 1843, at Toronto where he rose to hold the post of assistant commissioner.

Slight rubbing on the boards, small scuff on two facing images, but overall fine. Each page is approximately 9" x 11.5". The photographs document the activities of the three 20-something Scandinavian Princesses: Princess (now Queen) Margrethe of Denmark, Princess Astrid of Norway, and Princess Margaretha of Sweden, accompanied by other Scandinavian dignitaries. SAS (now Scandinavian Airlines) was and remains jointly operated by Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. The images include the princesses at the airport, their deluxe accommodations in the first class section of the plane, being served by an impeccably dressed chef (who also appears to be knighted by another dignitary in one image), and visiting with the pilots in the cockpit. When they arrive they are seen touring Los Angeles and Orange County, with a couple of images of them visiting a roadside diner, touring Hollywood, where they meet Jerry Lewis and seen delighted to be photographed with Elvis Presley, who is wearing an Army uniform. Elvis is seen kneeling in front of the princesses on the set of *G.I. Blues*. Perhaps a little less than half of the images are devoted to their trip to Disneyland where they are seen on several rides: riding in a firetruck, on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, demurely posed in a spinning teacup at the Mad Tea Party ride, and engaged in high level discussions with Mickey Mouse. They later visited Sea World, and in another image, a Princess rides shotgun in a California Highway Patrol car. The album concludes with their return home. A letter of recommendation laid in from a vice president of SAS at the rear notes that William Widder, almost certainly the owner and quite likely the photographer of this collection, "served as Publicity Manager for the entire Scandinavian Airlines System from 1956. executed and supervised every important publicity campaign. This included the introduction of the SAS route over the North Pole to Tokyo. and the introduction of our DC-8 jet services to both New York and Los Angeles." Professionally prepared with very nice images and in many ways completely charming. While we found a copy of the Elvis image online, we suspect very few of the others have been published.
