Quattordici capolavori della pittura secentesca, provenienti dal Wadsworth Atheneum di Hartford, nel Connecticut, il più antico museo americano, ancora oggi uno dei più importanti, con una collezione folta di capolavori dei maestri dell'arte europea soprattutto del Seicento e del Settecento. Il catalogo raccoglie un'accurata selezione di dipinti, tutti di grande formato, da quel nucleo così importante che nel museo americano è dedicato proprio al Seicento. Partendo da quel capolavoro indimenticabile che è L'estasi di San Francesco di Caravaggio, primissimo quadro di soggetto religioso dipinto dal grande artista intorno al 1594. Accanto a questo dipinto, come illustrano in modo approfondito le schede critiche contenute nel catalogo, le opere insigni di autori che da Caravaggio hanno tratto esempio: Cigoli, Morazzone, Gentileschi, Strozzi, Saraceni in Italia; Zurbarán e Ribera in Spagna; Le Sueur in Francia.
