Gide's long trip in the French tropical colony, made by boat, car, tipoye, on hors and foot was semiofficial in character. . . Gide was horrified by his findings and presented a challenging indictment of the callous exploitation of the Africans. . . The book exerted a strong influence on French opinion regarding colonial policy'. A picture of this book is available on request.
