Description du livre : London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1791. Quarto, original binding of half calf and marbled boards has had all the leather replaced, and with a "two-thirds relic" of the original leather spine (with black spine label) laid down. 51 pages, with 31 double-spread engravings, eleven of them lightly hand-colored. The large Map of Greece which is Plate One has a few closed tears on the folds, of which some have old tape repairs. Plate 28 is foxed. Otherwise, aside from the offsetting that seems to afflict all copies, the plates are very clean and fresh. Cover is worn at spine ends and corners, but otherwise very good. First Edition. The text, by Barbie du Bocage, is entitled "Critical Observations on the Maps of Ancient Greece: Compiled for the Travels of Anacharsis the Younger." Jean-Jacques Barthelemy (1716-1795) was Perpetual Secretary of the Academie des inscriptions et belles-lettres and Keeper of the Royal Collection of Medals. During his term of office he nearly doubled the size of the collection. In June 1775 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. After the publication of the present work he was elected a member of the Academie Francaise. N° de réf. du libraire 10803

Description du livre : Robinson, W. Heath (illustrateur). With Illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. New York: Dodd, Mead & Company (1921). Large octavo, original gilt-stamped navy-blue cloth, with color plate by Robinson inset on front cover. 200 pages, illustrated with six full-page color plates tipped in, and forty-three black and white illustrations in the text. Spine ends a trifle worn, with gilt titling rubbed off. Dampstain on front cover (2 inches) but not affecting the cover plate. A very good copy. Internal contents are very fine, aside from a 1/2 inch paper split at inner hinge. First American Edition. ".To the eight tales of Perrault (Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, etc) three others have been added here. 'Beauty and the Beast' by Mme. Leprince de Beaumont (1711-1781).'Princess Rossette' and 'The Friendly Frog' are from the prolific pen of Mme. d'Aulnoy (1650-1705), a contemporary of Perrault, whom she could sometimes rival in invention, if never in dramatic power." (Prefatory Note). William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) was one of the most famous and prolific English book illustrators of his time. Although his first work in book illustration appeared as early as 1897 (Danish Fairy Tales), it was not until the popularity of the illustrated gift book during the first twenty years of the twentieth century that he really began to hit his stride as an illustrator. By 1908 when his first gift book, "The Tempest" appeared, a new illustrator on a par with Dulac and Rackham had arrived. The present "Old Time Stories" by Perrault is considered among his most important commissions, and shows him at the height of his powers. N° de réf. du libraire 9208

It was the first cavalry regiment to later have an African-American officer who was a graduate of West Point. The Tenth Cavalry was generally employed as peacekeepers in the western territories, where the Native Americans dubbed them "Bufalo Soldiers." They protected settlers, safeguarded stagecoach and freight transportation, hunted down outlaws, and participated in campaigns against Native Americans. During the Spanish American War they served in the Phillipines and in Cuba, where they distinguished themselves in the charge of San Juan Hill. Six enlisted men in the Regiment were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. N° de réf. du libraire 12208

Sabin 47617. Rare. At the height of Indian depredations in Arizona in 1870 the U.S. Government withdrew from the Territory a considerable portion of Federal Troops, causing great alarm among the residents there. The Legislature took action quickly, gathering eyewitness testimony from citizens and officers detailing depredations to the U.S. Mail, destruction of crops, the murder of farmers and their families, the destrtuction and stealing of livestock and horses, and more. Description du livre : The Journal and Drawings of H. M. T Powell. Edited by Douglas S. Watson. San Francisco: The Book Club of California, (1931). Folio, hardcover, quarter bound in natural niger goatskin and buckram boards. [14], 272 pp., illustrated after drawings of early California, including a stunning fold-out frontispiece drawing of Pueblo de Los Angeles. Front and back endleaf darkened from underlying boards as usual. A fine copy in original buckram slipcase with leather tips at head and foot. Printed letterpress in two colors on fine rag paper by Ed and Robert Grabhorn. One of 300 copies. A fine copy. Rittenhouse 471; Graff 3334; Howes P525; Heller & Magee 158; Kurutz 575 Almost nothing was known about the author of this journal, about whom Douglas Watson in his Introduction makes the comment, ".In its completeness of detail and wealth of description of the life and daily doings of his fellow immigrants and the country through which he journeyed, it is unsurpassed. Many diaries of travelers by way of the South Pass to California in the years from 1846 to 1850 have been published, and but very few covering the Santa Fe, Gila, Colorado Trail. Of all these none is its equal." The Grabhorn brothers waited many years for full payment for the printing of this work, one of their finest productions. By 1931 the Depression was well underway, with predictable consequences for luxury purchases. Published price at the time was $30.00. N° de réf. du libraire 12220

Light foxing at prelims and last few pages. Covers otherwise bright as new and internal contents exceptionally fine. Enclosed in a slightly worn custom box of quarter blue morocco and linen, lined in plush. Bookplate. Name in ink of Edith Garrard Wilson on front pastedown endleaf. Howes G-70; Wagner-Camp 182; Sabin 26687; Rader 1538; Rittenhouse 236. "Garrard.was only seventeen when he went to the West. He describes the Santa Fe Trail in the fall of 1846 with Cerain St. Vrain's train, via Bent's Fort. After a winter in Taos, he returned over the Santa Fe Trail in 1847. Garrard captured the sound of the trapper's language with a skill equal to Ruxton's, and this work remains one of the great classics not only of the Trail but of the entire Southwest."(Rittenhouse). Garrard was eyewitness to the trial and hanging that followed the Taos Massacre which had occurred shortly before his arrival there. Unusual for his time, he commiserated with the Mexicans and Indians, commenting, ".It certainly did appear to be a great assumption on the part of the Americans to conquer a country and then arraign the revolting inhabitants for treason.". Description du livre : Written in the Year 1568.and translated from the Original Spanish by Maurice Keatinge. With an Introduction by Arthur D. Howden Smith. New York: Robert M. McBride (1927). Large octavo, cloth, in a dust wrapper. 562 pages, illustrated. A very good copy. "This chronicle, by a bluff companion of Cortes on his bold expedition into Mexico, has been properly characterized as the most vivid document of its kind in any language. Nothing more absorbing has been written about young America, the goal of Old World adventurers; nothing more convincing has been set down by any one of them. It is an amazing story told with all the uncompromising candor of a soldier. To read it is to be an eye witness of one of the most astonishing conquests in the world's history." (the Publisher).
