Présentation de l'éditeur :
“Buttana,” Pietra said, softly. Such an ugly word. She looked up. “And the men?” she asked. “What are they called?” Lucia frowned. “I don’t understand.” “The men who sleep with women to whom they are not married. What is the insulting name for them?” “There...there is no such name.” “I see,” Pietra said, slowly. “So it is bad for a woman to do it, but acceptable for the man.” Feminist ideas were unusual in 1960s Sicily when a man could put his bride to death for discovering she was not a virgin. The unfortunate circumstances of Pietra's birth mean her mother is seen as a slut. Pietra is treated harshly not only by her mother but by most people in the village and she is kept in almost total ignorance, knowing nothing about sex.
