Description du livre D. Appleton & Company, New York, 1855. Hardcover. État : Very good. First Edition. Two engraved views, four engraved portraits, 154 engraved textual illustrations, and two engraved maps, including one folding. New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1855. First edition. Having gone through numerous reprints, this work is in all likelihood the most important book ever printed about San Francisco, capturing all the heady events and driving personalities that turned San Francisco into a dynamic world-class city just six years after the onslaught of the gold rush. The book is arranged in three sections: a general summary of Spanish California, the annals of the city, and a section devoted to miscellaneous topics such as fires, hotels, the Vigilance Committee, etc. Soule and Nisbet were both newspapermen and had abundant first-hand knowledge of the events they depicted. Octavo. In a three-quarter red morocco over marbled paper binding, with five raised bands, decorative gilt stamping, and marbled endpapers. A tear to the folding map has been expertly repaired. The spine is darkened just a touch, with some general minor wear along the extremities; otherwise very good. The Zamorano Eighty #70. N° de réf. du libraire 64472
