The author combined with Mary Kendall Browne in 1913 to win the Mixed Doubles Championship of the United States. He had 64 other tournament wins in his tennis career. In these 304 pages he introduces us to the following great players: Johnny the Hennessey, Ellsworth Vines Jr., Smarty Hunter, Bunny Austin, Cilly Aussem, Helen Hull Jacobs, Rene' Lacoste,Jean Borotra, Karel Kozeluh, Hans Nusslein, Alice Marble, Dorothy Bundy, and Donald Budge. Plenty of B/W photos. On page 150, in his review of (26) `Tennis Nations' , he reviews Canadian players like Bobby Murray of Montreal. He also gives us glimpses of the professional tour, famous people (e.g. Maude Adams, Mary Pickford, and Mary Garden) he met during his travels, his writing career, and his INSTRUCTIONAL tips for the game. A nostalgic look at one of the sports played by the well-to-do. BONUS (clipping laid -in) - magazine article by Paul Gallico about Tilden and F.J. Perry (c. 1937). Cond : Boards are green with gilt lettering -spine only. D.J. is missing. Boards are sli. sun-faded BUT very little worn even at points and hinges. Binding tight, volume clean, spine fine. No names, marks, tears, creases, stains, nor bumps.VERY collectible !! Hard-to-find in this condition. Quote (p. 68) : " Johnny's first appearance at Wimbledon produced an effect that shook the British Empire to the foundations. He appeared on the Centre Court in black and white striped trousers.
