Détails bibliographiques

Titre : The Advancement of Arts, Manufactures, and ...

Éditeur : London: Printed and sold by the Author, at the Society?s Office? 1776 [?1779].

Date d'édition : 1776

Description :

2 volumes, folio, pp. xxvi [i.e. xx, pp. xviii?xx misnumbered], iii?iv, 239, and 56 engraved plates; pp. (vii), 72, and 51 engraved and mezzotint plates. A total of 106 plates. First 3 leaves in vol. 1 with pale dampstain and small hole in lower corner of title, otherwise a very clean set. Contemporary German half mottled sheep, spines ruled in gilt with green and blue labels, marbled sides (volume 1 with different marbled paper and endpapers replaced at an early date), edges and corners a little worn, small nick in foot of spine of vol. 1. The first original English atlas of machinery and mechanical devices, a reissue of the edition of 1776?1779 with new title-pages and a list of plates in place of the lists of subscribers. The text is otherwise not reset. In this issue the number of the plate and its page reference have been added to some of the plates; those plates not so engraved have been numbered in manuscript in this copy. The plates are from drawings by William Bailey and his son, Alexander Mabyn Bailey. The first group of plates in volume 1 are concerned with various branches of agriculture, that being by far the largest industry in Britain at the time. The remaining plates in volume 1 are concerned with manufactures, and reflect Britain?s rise as the pre-eminent manufacturing nation. They include the stocking-frame, looms, cranes, a sawmill, a hole-borer, and many others. The plates in the second volume (which constituted a supplement in the first edition) follow the same arrangement, but are all printed by engraving or mezzotint, most unusual in any technological work. The whole project was overseen by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce (today the Royal Society of Arts) which awarded medals for outstanding designs. The first volume, entitled The Advancement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce, originally appeared in 1772, reissued a new edition in 1776, and the second volume, with coloured plates, appeared first in 1779. It is not surprising that this copy is in a German binding as the book was in demand there, two German-language editions being issued in 1773 and 1779. N° de réf. du libraire 2361
