Description du livre Reed, Wellington, 1951. Hard Cover. État : VG+. No Jacket. Photos (illustrateur). 1st. The small North Island township of Thames today has little resemblance to the gold-rush centre of the later 1800s. The precious metal was discovered in the sparsley settled locality in 1867. This came at a time when the land wars and the withdrawal of British troops had created a period of recession, particularly in the Auckland area. By 1870 the Thames population had risen to 20,000 and it was gold that created this boom town, outreaching Auckland where in 1867 the population was just over 11,000. Because of its close proximity to Thames. Auckland benefited greatly from its prosperity and it is said that Auckland's commercial and industrial foundations were built from the Thames gold-fields. One measure of the success of any gold-town was its number of hostelries and at the hight of its boom there was said to be 80 hotels in the township area two miles long and a half-mile wide. However, there were other aspects to the town --- many churches and cultural instritutions, its own stock market --- but the mine workings and the thump of stamper batteries dominated sight and sound. John Grainger has produced an excellent record of those boom days at Thames where, as witth many gold-towns those days did not continue and by the 1920s the golden era was well past. The author's story covers all aspects of that era, from education to newspapers, the characters and personalities (including "Thames barmaids", crime and punishment, Maori influences and and some of the lingering legends. A scarce book, his copy having a neatly hand printed index occupying six blank pages at the rear of the book. First edition from Reed of 1951, 138 pages excluding "index", b/w photos throughout. Fawn hard covers are VG+ with few unobtrusive marks to rear board, internally excellent, no inscriptions. N° de réf. du libraire 004418
