A propos de cet article

Reddish brown covers. Good tight book, end papers all intact, gold lettering on front and spine. Front cover has some speckling marks, mostly on upper half and a few on the lower half. The spine is faded and also has speckling on the entire spine and a few chips at the top of the spine. Interior is in very good condition. Content of the book was originally published in the July 1869 Issue of North American Review. The author examines the practices of those running the Erie Railroad. After all issues were sold, author republished to include recent events, omitted a few passages and enlarged and remodeled many. Today, this would have been investigative journalism, with many similarities between the corporate leaders of 1860 and the corporate leaders in today's headlines. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 152 pages. This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1869. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... 1 A CHAPTER OF ERIE. I. THE history of the Erie Railway has been a checkered one^-'Chartered in 1832, and organized in 1833, the cost of its construction was then ^ estimated at three millions o^f dollars, of which but i one million were subscribed. By the time the first report was made the estimated cost had increased to six millions, and the work of construction was actually begun on the strength of stock subscriptions of a million and a half, and a loan of three millions from the - ; State. In 1842 the estimated cost had increased to 21 twelve millions and a half, and both means in hand ii ' and credit were wholly exhausted. Subscription-books were opened, but no names were entered in them; the city of New York was applied to, and refused a loan of its credit; again the legislature was besieged, but the aid from this quarter was now hampered with inadmissible conditions; accordingly work was suspended, and the property of the insolvent corporation A passed into the hands of assignees. In 1845 the State came again to the rescue ; it surrendered all I claim to the three millions it had already lent to the company; and one half of their old subscriptions having been given up by the stockholders, and a new J>^ subscription of three millions raised, the whole prop^T". erty of the road was mortgaged for three millions 3^ more. At last, in 1851, eighteen years after its com| mencement, the road was opened from Lake Erie to tide-water. Its financial troubles had, however, as yet V"J- only begun, for in 1859 it could not meet the interest ' on its mortgages, and passed into the hands of a re^ ceiver. In 1861 an arrangement of interests was effected, and a new company was organized. The I next year the old New York and Erie Railroad Company disappeared under a forec...
