Date d'édition : 1816

Folio, 4 leaves, pp. xxvii, 238, (4), (2) blank, 47 engraved plates (9 folding) and 3 folding maps (1 hand-coloured and geological). Half-title, plate 1 bound as a frontispiece, sub-title to the ?Additional Observations? Very faint dampstain in upper and lower margins towards the end. Twentieth century maroon straight grained morocco, spine lettered in gilt with gilt-ruled panels (spine slightly faded), t.e.g., other edges uncut, marbled endpapers, by Riviere & Son. A very good and large copy. Signature ?Brannon? on half-title, i.e. George Brannon, author of Vectis Scenery and other books on the Isle of Wight. FIRST EDITION, including an important geological work and an early geological map. ?Webster?s original geological work was entirely concerned with the stratigraphy of the uppermost Jurassic, the Cretaceous, and the Tertiary rocks of southern England. In his chief paper (1814) Webster recorded a highly important piece of research, perhaps the first of its kind (being detailed and thoroughly scientific) on the geology of a British region? Of even greater importance was his survey of the Isle of Wight (Cretaceous and Tertiary) and ?Isle? of Portland (mostly Jurassic and Cretaceous), with the production of one of the first geological maps of any part of Britain and one that was on a larger scale and more accurate than anything previously attempted. The geology of this classic region was almost completely unknown before Webster sketched, in words and pictures, the features of its structure?? (John Challinor in DSB). Webster?s contribution, in a series of twelve letters, occupies over half of this large and beautifully produced book, beginning on p. 117. Most of the folding plates are panoramas of cliff and rock formations. Challinor 80; also pp. 93?94: ??unsurpassed? The appearance of the map is a landmark in the history of the geological mapping of Britain.? Geikie, The founders of geology, p. 239. N° de réf. du libraire 2954
