Description :

Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-vii [viii] [1] 2-342 [343-344: blank] [note: final leaf is a blank], twelve inserted plates with illustrations by Claude Shepperson, original decorated blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, black coated endpapers. First British edition, first binding. The U.S. Bowen-Merrill edition preceded the British edition by approximately one month. The two editions have minor textual differences. ".a gripping adventure story as well as a historic milestone in modern science fiction." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 782-86. "The last and most complex [of Wells's early scientific romances] is THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON. The two first men, Bedford and Cavor are well-contrasted, the civilization of the Selenites is excellent both as horror and satire; and the novel abounds with wonderful passages of unforced description at which Wells is unrivaled. This lovely book also contains much of Wells's delightful humor; it has kept the joints of his discourse oiled to this day. After THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, Wells's science fiction novels are never quite the same." - Bleiler (ed), Science Fiction Writers, p. 28. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-166; (1981) 1-175; (1987) 1-98; (1995) 1-98; and (2004) II-1225. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2335. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 795. Description du livre George Newnes, London, 1901. First appearance (Wells 18). 2 volumes. Illustrated with wood engravings. Royal 8vo. First appearance of this classic science fiction novel illustrated by Claude Shepperson, many plates of which are only available in the periodical issue. Lacking the final installments - the serial ran through August 1901 - although the tale reaches a conclusion (of sorts) in the June 1901 issue, with only the following note to tantalize readers: "Here the story, as we originally received it, ends. But we have just received a most extraordinary communication which certainly gives a curious and unexpected air of conviction to the narrative. If our correspondent is to be believed, Mr. Cavor is alive in the moon, and he is sending messages to the earth. We hope to be in a position to satisfy the curiosity of our readers in our next issue."Also contains A. C. Doyle articles "A Glimpse of the Army" & "Strange Studies From Life" [based on True Crime episodes], as well as an interview with Doyle, "A British Commando". VG+ (sq & tight, with sound hinges/minor extremity wear & soiling/Vol XXI with some foxing to edges). Original publisher's light blue pictoral cloth, stamped in black & gilt. Description du livre George Newnes, London, 1901. Hardcover. État : Fine. First Impression. First British Edition, First Issue, with black coated end papers. 8vo; viii, 342pp, with a frontispiece and 11 further full-page illustrations by Claude Shepperson. Publisher's dark blue decorative cloth, the upper cover and spine stamped gilt (the first and primary binding state, of four). An unusually Fine, bright copy, the hinges uncracked, of one of the most difficult of Wells's science fiction titles to be found in collectible condition. The last and perhaps most complex of Wells's early scientific romances, inspired by Jules Verne’s 'Journey to the Moon.' Unlike Verne, Wells had all scientific aspects of his lunar voyage verified for plausibility by experts at the time. In 1919, the book was turned into the first of the films to be based on Wells's work. "These early 'scientific romances' remain unsurpassed for their imagination and visionary power. Where Wells's contemporaries saw him as adding the scientific imagination to nineteenth-century romance, the twentieth century regarded him as the greatest of the forerunners of modern science fiction. His tales of future evolution, alien intelligence, interplanetary warfare and technological dystopia anticipated most of science fiction's thematic repertoire." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. N° de réf. du libraire BB0707
