Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-9 11-284, rebound in maroon cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, plain endpapers. First British (and first hardcover) edition, first printing. The British edition was preceded by an American edition published in New York by Peter Fenelon Collier as his part of his paperback series, "'Once a Week' Semi-Monthly Library," Vol. XII, No. 19, dated 21 March 1895. Guy Thyrle discovers a drug which separates his soul from his body and, after taking a series of cosmic voyages, is unable to return to his body after it -- seemingly dead -- is cremated by a villainous friend. "This cosmic voyage is the high point of the novel, and represents a considerable imaginative achievement. It is the first of its kind, previous excursions beyond the solar system having been undertaken only within the context of the religious imagination . THE GHOST OF GUY THYRLE, in the attitudes to the phenomenal universe that are manifest within it, clearly belongs to the literature of the scientific imagination, and represents a notable contribution to that literature . It is a highly original work, featuring the first voyage outside the solar system in American science fiction, and it should be given much more attention than it has so far received." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 869-72. "A curious work, with many good imaginative touches. The extraterrestrial civilizations are well-imagined for the day." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 708. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-70 and (2004) II-397. Clute and Nicholls (ed), The Encyclopedia of Science (1993), pp. 421-422. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 82 and A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 138. Locke, Voyages in Space 70. Bleiler (1978), p. 71. Reginald 05248. See BAL 5674. Topp, Victorian Yellowbacks & Paperbacks, 1849-1905, II, p. 358. Rebound without the blank leaf preceding the half title leaf and without the two leaves of publisher's ads at rear (which are part of signature 18). Slight spine lean, boards rubbed at corners, a few pages smudged, still a good if plain copy of a very scarce book. Most extant copies are in wretched condition or rebound. An important book and a major genre rarity. (#149899). N° de réf. du libraire
