Éditeur : Schocken Verlag, Berlin

Date d'édition : 1936

Type de livre : Book

Description :

150 copies made for distribution to friends of the Schocken Verlag in 1937; this rare copy signed and dedicated by Scholem in Jerusalem, Passover 1937. Some damp staining to back cover. The first part is Scholem’s Sohar translation, the second part his extraordinary commentary. In Walter Benjamin’s letter to Scholem of 24 October, 1935, he writes in thanks for a copy of the book: ‘I can congratulate you most highly on what you’ve achieved in this translation-I can do this without in the slightest being able to judge the no doubt immense technical and artistic achievement, which this translation represents-it brings all this material surprisingly close to one who is unschooled in such a hermetic text. The translation was surely not easier than that of a completed poem. Except that translators of poetry usually don’t have control over the denial which is here the necessary concomitant of success and which simultaneously points out the methodology, namely to combine the translation with the commentary. Therefore I find your achievement a model surpassing the borders of the material! It hopefully won’t surprise you to hear from me that this material is still very close to my heart: Similarity that is not sense-based, thus here it is as I developed it in ‘On the Mimetic’ - if not understood in that sense by you, but nevertheless - that concept of unsensual similarity (Unsinnliche ƒhnlichkeit) having many faceted illustrations in the way in which the author of the Sohar understands sound structures, and much more ?even than that understands the written (Schriftzeichen) as deposits of interconnectedness (Weltzusammenh‰nge).’ Already offered in last catalogue five years ago, astonishing that it never sold. Raising the price by 50, maybe that'll help. Some damp staining to back cover. N° de réf. du libraire 253
