Johann Christoph Friedrich vonSchiller (November 10, 1759 – May 9, 1805), usually known as FriedrichSchiller, was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and dramatist.During the last several years of his life (1788–1805), Schiller strucka productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous andinfluential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, with whom he discussed much onissues concerning aesthetics, encouraging Goethe to finish works heleft merely as sketches; this thereby gave way a period now referredto as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Die Xenien (TheXenies), a collection of short but harshly satiric poems in which bothSchiller and Goethe verbally attacked those persons they perceived tobe enemies of their aesthetic agenda. Johann Wolfgang Goethe, latervon Goethe, (28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German polymath: hewas a poet, novelist, dramatist, humanist, scientist, theorist, painter, and for ten years chief minister of state for the duchy ofWeimar. Goethe was one of the key figures of German literature and themovement of Weimar Classicism in the late 18th and early 19thcenturies; this movement coincides with Enlightenment, Sentimentality("Empfindsamkeit"), Sturm und Drang, and Romanticism. The author ofFaust and Theory of Colours, he inspired Darwin with his independentdiscovery of the human intermaxillary jaw bones and focus onevolutionary ideas. Goethe's influence spread across Europe, and forthe next century his works were a primary source of inspiration inmusic, drama, poetry, and philosophy.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
