First edition. Yellow cloth variant binding of unknown status, but a primary binding and perhaps earlier than those bound in red cloth (see Wolff). Lost race adventure story set in an imaginary Central American republic, not far from Guatemala, during a power struggle for control of the region sparked by a would be dictator. In this land, remnants of the Aztecs in a hidden city safeguard Montezuma's harlequin opal, a prophetic gem whose rays predict the outcome of war. The struggle for possession of the opal results in the destruction of the hidden city and the annihilation of the guardians of the stone. In the final battle the gem is lost forever when cast into a raging torrent of water. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, pp. 64-5 (lacking volume 1). Day, Supplemental Checklist, p. 44. Reginald 07600. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Hubin (1994), p. 422. Wolff 3370. W. H. Smith & Sons subscription library labels affixed to front paste-downs, bindings leaned, considerable soiling and some staining to cloth, partial hairline cracks along inner hinges, a grubby, but sound copy of a very uncommon book. (#148383). N° de réf. du libraire 148383
