Description du livre Harper & Row, New York, 1970. First Edition. Quarto. This book is simply an effort to show what a man endures when his country decides to go to war, with or without his personal agreement on the righteousness of the cause . . . In their own eyes, they were participating in everyday events while serving in a foreign land where their country was at war . . . a war without heroes. What he had seen over a life of photograping men at war was repeated in the hell of Vietnam. After 75,000 Frenchmen had died at Dien Bien Phu, David Douglas Duncan who had seen the insanity now photographed America's misadventure into Vietnam. Through all the nightmare, he saw again the bonding of the men. As was his experience in previous wars, he was there primarily with Marines. The lie of the "McNamara line" which ended up with rusted equipment in the jungles of Southeast Asia is in constant evidence yet there were the brave men who had learned to fight aginst the impossible odds of a hostile jungle, the worst monsoon in recent history, and the nightmares from Con Thien to Khe San. It is easy to look back and see the political madness but to look into the faces of these men doing their best to do their duty for their country and to help save each other is a lesson far different from the ivory tower of those who speak about this war without any understanding of what it meant to the grunts who saw their own who were severaly wounded, dead and yet carried on while the homeland debated and often protested the war from relative safety and security. Bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt in unclipped pictorial dust jacket with a few tape mends, small chips and closed tears. N° de réf. du libraire 018863
