Contents: Introduction, Planning, Design, Detail, Organisation, Description, Distribution, Conclusion. From the Conclusion: "It is no coincidence that the bulk of the photographs contained in this study have been taken in the Channel Islands, for here the defences have survived intact as the islands were by-passed during the last year of the war in Europe. The condition of many make them eyesores and a danger to unwary explorers, yet there are several representative examples which should be preserved here. On the basis that it is impossible to retain everything on financial grounds, the time has still not arrived where the work of conservation receives official support so that this important activity lies in the hands of the individual. . . If this study serves to generate and stimulate the interest necessary to raise support for preservation of the finest and most significant remaining examples of German military architecture, than it will have been worthwhile. " Partridge's other works include Fortifications of Alderney: A Concise History and Guide to the Defences of Alderney from Roman Times to the Second World War and Mirus: The Making of a Battery.
