Description du livre Frank Graham. Newcastle upon Tyne. 1973 1st edition. 8vo (139 x 218mm). Ppviii,144. B/w wood engravings by Joseph Crawhall, bibliography. Blue boards, spine titled in gilt. Slight spotting to edges but very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. This is a biographical account of the careers of the two Newcastle engravers, Joseph Crawhall the First, and Joseph Crawhall the Second. Wood engravings mostly, illustrated books, cartoons for Punch, commercial art and advertising. "So strong was his style of cutting blocks and decorating covers and pages that several generations of artists after the three famous ones that he most immediately influenced have kept to the wood as the expressive and suitable medium for illustrating books. And the vitality and originality of wood-engravings by Dorothea Braby, John Farleigh, Robert Gibbings, Eric Gill, Gertrude Hermes, the list could be considerably extended, has been the glory of much of twentieth-century English bookmaking as was Crawhall's wood-engraving one of the glories of the nineteenth century." Joseph Crawhall III (1861-1913, "The Great Silence"), a nearly-great but not quite watercolourist, gets numerous brief mentions but the book is not at all about him. Chapters include: Joseph Crawhall the First (1793-1853); Joseph Crawhall the Second (1821-1896), the early years; The years of achievement (1881-1889); The last six years; The achievement of Joseph Crawhall; Bibliographical note; List of books by Joseph Crawhall. In the sporting world, Joseph Crawhall I is known for his "excessively rare" 1827 book Grouse Shooting Made Quite Easy, whilst Joseph Crawhall II wrote the Compleatest Angling Booke That Ever Was Writ, and, A Collection of Right Merrie Garlands for North Country Anglers.
