Large octavo, inserted engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, lithographed title leaf, other illustrations, some full-page in the text, title page printed in red and black, original bevel-edged mustard cloth stamped in black, gold and blind, all edges marbled, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in gold. First edition. A long novel by a Midwestern Protestant Episcopal clergyman and educator, driven by the spirit of evangelical reform, meant to inspire readers to "correct some of the enormous social abuses of our nation." - preface. The book's title is meant to be taken sarcastically: the author attacks the evils both of plutocracy and of communism (whose bane is traced back to Russian nihilists), and asserts that hope for nations lies only in Christianity. At one point in the story, a general strike and violent revolution sweep through America but are ultimately quelled. Wright (III) 3241. A bright, tight, very good, solid copy. (#118062).
