Description :

octavo, (vxi), 303 pp. A penetrating study of Britain’s top fighter ace in the Great War. Ira Jones’ biography of Britain’s top scoring ace of World War I has become the subject of some controversy over the last few years, most notably as it is the source of the claim of 73 "kills" for Mannock, thereby making him the number one scoring Allied Ace of the war. Later research has thrown serious doubt on this claim and indeed Mannock himself only claimed 51 kills. Jones’s biography is nevertheless an important account, especially when seen in the context of the time in which it was first written. In particular the biography delves into the mind of Mannock, portraying the singular nature of his character and the true stress that these pioneer air fighters experienced in the last few months of the war. Illustrated with photographs. Damp stain to lower portion of the fore-edge of the front cover, spine discolored, small name on front endpaper. The fragile dust jacket has several chips along edges and the spine is darkened. N° de réf. du libraire

Description du livre Nicholson & Watson, London. Paper. État : Fair. Reprint. Undated, but about 1940. 192 pages in a popular paperback format with a coloured front cover illustration by Dennis McLoughlin. The covers are somewhat rubbed and dusty with a 1" tear and a smal chip at the foot of the front panel. The book was first published in 1934. This reprint appears to have been issued in about 1940 as a morale booster. Very hagiographic, but very evocative. Size: 4½" x 7". N° de réf. du libraire 009259

Published in 1936, this is the exciting story of the staunch socialist who became Britain’s most successful fighter pilot of the First World War. Known as the ‘ace with one eye’, Edward Mannock’s engineering background became a crucial factor in his surviving seventeen months of deadly fighting high above the trenches. Indeed, he was the first Allied airman to realise the supreme importance of applying tactics to formation flying. This book covers in detail Mannock's learning to fly and first tour of duty in France with No. 40 Squadron; and his second tour of duty in France with Nos. 74 and 85 Squadrons. Illustrated with a frontispiece and eight plates. N° de réf. du libraire C127B418
