Description :

Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-3] 4-52 [53-54: ad] [55-58: blank] [note: last two leaves are blanks], inserted frontispiece with illustration by Chris Hammond, original decorated dark brown flexible paper-backed cloth wrappers printed in green and gold. First separate printing. A BOOK OF STRANGE SINS was first published in 1893. This is the second of four chapbooks issued as the "Strange Sins" series, three published in 1897, the last in early 1898, reprinting collectively the contents of A BOOK OF STRANGE SINS. The booklets in the series, A LITERARY GENT, THE LONELY GOD, THE APPLES OF SIN, and A STRANGE SIN, were published in leatherette at 6d and in cloth at 1s, or could be had complete in one volume. THE LONELY GOD collects the title story, "A Suicide" and "A Lost Soul." All three narrate the commission and supernatural punishment of particular sins. These stories, with their mix of sensation and piety, were very popular in their day. The chapbooks are rarely seen now, and they furnish attractive examples of book design mixing art nouveau with the medieval aesthetic revived and revised by William Morris's Kelmscott Press. Bleiler (1978), p. 113. Reginald 08195. Hubin (1994), p. 465. Queen, The Detective Short Story, p. 62. Topp, Victorian Yellowbacks & Paperbacks II, p. 361. Endpapers and several preliminary and terminal leaves foxed, a very good copy. (#115526). N° de réf. du libraire 115526
