A propos de cet article

2 parts in 1 volume, 4to, 12 leaves (including the engraved and printed titles), pp. 1097, (59); ((vi), 160, (2) errata. Separate title to the second part. Contemporary French speckled calf, joints and ends of spine very neatly repaired, flat spine richly gilt, red morocco label, marbled endpapers. Some foxing throughout, and a small (1 cm.) tear in fore-edge margin of the printed title, otherwise a nice copy. LAST AND BEST EDITION (issue with statement of royal privilege on the title), expanded and corrected by Georg Mercklin. See G&M 6744 (first edition of 1637): ?Van der Linden?s book was at the time of its appearance the most complete medical bibliography yet produced. He issued corrected editions in 1651 and 1662 and G.A. Mercklin published a considerably expanded version as Lindenius renovatus in 1686.? The second part is a subject index which Besterman calls ?useful for its elaborate classification.? ?Linden?s bibliographic work.is a list of medical writings arranged alphabetically by the first name of the author, with indexes of surnames and subjects. An innovation found in Mercklin?s revision is the listing of a few articles from the publications of learned societies. In spite of the large number of references contained in this work, it has been criticised for what it omitted. It is, moreover, the first medical bibliography which resembles a modern work of similar content. Altogether, the De scriptis medicis shows a new grasp of the potentialities of the printing press not found in earlier bibliographies.? (Brodman, The development of medical bibliography, 1954, pp. 29?33). See also Fulton, The great medical bibliographers, pp. 35?36; Besterman, Beginnings of systematic bibliography, p. 57.
