Synopsis : "To Long Tan" is the second volume of the "Official History" of Australia's involvement in Southeast Asian conflicts from 1948-1975 and the first of two volumes on Australian ground operations in Vietnam. It explains the development of strategy and defence policies since World War II, the rationale for the deployment of forces to Vietnam in the context of international events, and the distinctive experience of those forces until the Battle of Long Tan in August 1966. It throws new light on Long Tan itself and depicts the Australian experience in Vietnam. Ian McNeill addresses the conflict between the Allies as different methods of operating were employed, and details the great changes to the army these new directions created.
About the Author: Ian McNeill is a graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, the Australian Staff College, the University of New England and the Australian National University. As an infantry officer he served in Korea, Singapore and Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team. In 1972 he joined the military history section of Army Office. His work there, among other things, produced The Team: Australian Army Advisers in Vietnam 1962-1972.
