Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-3] 4-352, four inserted plates with illustrations by M. Leone Bracker, original blue pictorial cloth, front panel stamped in black and yellow, spine panel stamped in yellow. First U.S. edition. The U.S. edition of THE COTTAGE ON THE FELLS (London : T. Werner Laurie, 1908) published in England as by Stacpoole. A murder mystery and detective story about a fiendish artist who, after serving 25 years for murder in France, learns how to make convincingly lifelike masks, which he uses to impersonate a string of victims, whom he then viciously stabs and mutilates. The chiaroscuro illustrations by Bracker are quite dramatic. Listed in the title index by Hubin (1994), but not in the author's book listing (where it is listed by its British title, THE COTTAGE ON THE FELLS). Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 D-346. Cloth rubbed at edges, a good copy. (#148140). N° de réf. du libraire 148140
