Description :

The Moonstone was originally serialised by Charles Dickens, a close friend of Wilkie Collins, in his magazine All the Year Round between 4 January and 8 August 1868. The 2 bound volumes of All The Year Round cover the period 14 December 1867 to 28 November 1868 and thus incorporate all of The Moonstone. The Moonstone in novel form was published in three hardback volumes on 16 July 1868 by Tinsley Brothers of Catherine Street, in Covent Garden. A second, revised edition was issued in 1871. This serialisation is the first time that the novel appeared in print. The Moonstone is generally considered to be the first detective novel in the English language. The Moonstone and The Woman in White are considered Wilkie Collins' best novels. Besides creating many of the ground rules of the detective novel, The Moonstone also reflected Collins' enlightened social attitudes in his treatment of the servants in the novel. TS Eliot, claiming that the genre was "invented by Collins and not by Poe", declared it to be "the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels". Dorothy L Sayers, a queen of crime in the 1930s and 40s, echoing Eliot, pronounced it "probably the finest detective story ever written". 2-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner's annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact, but spine is faded/sunned.
