A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

From the beginning of recorded history, man has engaged in warfare -- so much so that it sometimes seems the prevailing condition of mankind, merely interrupted from time to time by brief episodes of peace. This book records this universal phenomenon in an exceptionally revealing way. Instead of the traditional chronological approach, it examines war cyclically, outlining its perpetual sequence: from peace to outbreak, through campaigns, battles, sieges, invasions, retreats, Armageddon, surrender, aftermath, and the return to peace.

This book analyzes the course of war at every point: the recruitment of armies, the role of heroes and leaders, the rituals of diplomacy, the manufacturing and development of arms, the treatment of prisoners and wounded. It is concerned not only with battles, campaigns and strategy, but also with pacifism, military training, spoils, industry, guerrilla activity, and customs of ransom. Keegan has incorporated a selection of extracts from soldiers' diaries and dispatches which makes the person experience of war poignantly vivid.

Contains color and black-and-white illustrations. Glossary.
